Newsletter 2010-01
Editorial
Welcome to the first newsletter of 2010.
There's absolutely heaps of goodies in this missive with great things happening at IDS during what promises to be a rather soccer obsessed year. But we don't mind, we're still going to have fun being theatrical, aren't we? Of course we are!
So sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. Maybe brew a cup of coffee, or tea, or a glass of ethanol solution before you start. Or even a bucket of stewed socks - whatever wobbles your jelly.
And we're off...
It's a musical
Our first show of the year is "South Pacific," the Rogers and Hammerstein musical. Here is some quotes / info from wikipedia to whet your appetite.
South Pacific is generally considered to be one of the greatest musicals in history.
The musical won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1950.
The Broadway production of South Pacific was nominated for ten Tony Awards and won all of them, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Libretto. It was the only musical production ever to win all four Tony Awards for acting.
Several of its songs, including "Bali Ha'i," "Some Enchanted Evening," "Happy Talk", "Younger than Springtime" and "I'm in Love with a Wonderful Guy" have become worldwide standards.
"I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" was adapted for a commercial jingle for Clairol hair coloring in the 1970s.
The song "Bali Ha'i" is performed by Brenda Strong in the second season of 3rd Rock From the Sun twice, much to the pleasure of the character of Tommy.

And the director has this to say
Set in World War II, South Pacific is a moving musical of love found and lost, of predjudices overcome, and wonderful music such as "Wash that man right out of my hair", "Some Enchanted Evening", "Bali Hai" and "Happy Talk". Two Americans fall in love with two of the islanders, one a French man, and one a Tonkinese lady. They find that their inborn racial predjudice gets in the way of their love, and have to sort out their ideas before they can carry on. Sadly, one love story ends tragically, while the other flourishes.
We need a large cast of singers and actors of all ages and races as quite a few of the characters are Tonkinese (a lot of the scenes are based on this fact). We also need two children who can sing, both of colour. There is a large chorus and lots of principle roles to fill. The show is fun and filled with great music!
Auditions are on the 24th January at the Irene Homes Hall in Albert Street, at 2pm.

Membership fees
It costs a lot of money to keep IDS running and part of that is paid for in membership fees. The amount is only R50 per annum per person, which is not a lot at all. We are asking all of you to please make an effort to pay your membership fees. This can be done at any IDS production, audition or social gathering (more details later)
Social Calendar
This year we're going to have lots of social evenings and you're ALL invited. Details will be forthcoming in future mailings, and will also be posted on our website (http://www.irene-dramatic-society.co.za)
